⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY When a young nun at a secluded abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past (Demián Bichir) and a novice on the threshold of her final vows (Taissa Farmiga) are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun. The abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned, as they try to seal a gateway to hell that’s been pried open. THE PROS Taissa Farmiga is a standout, bringing a quiet, sincere strength to Sister Irene that makes her a perfect protagonist for this gothic nightmare. The setting is absolute business; the Romanian castle used for the abbey is atmospheric as hell, with its crumbling stone and fog-drenched graveyards. It’s a 7/10 because the first part of the movie builds a sense of dread that is genuinely gripping, using the isolated location to make you feel like help is miles away. The visual design of Valak remains epic status—that pale face and yellow-eyed stare are enough to keep anyone awake. Jonas Bloquet provides some punchy humor as Frenchie, giving the audience a much-needed breather between the more intense scares. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the middle part is quite sluggish, with a few too many "walking down dark corridors" scenes that start to feel repetitive. The logic in the final part gets a bit thin, especially with the "blood of Christ" plot point, which feels a little too convenient and action-movie for a gothic horror. It misses a higher mark because it relies heavily on loud jump-scares rather than the lingering psychological dread seen in the main Conjuring films. Some of the CGI towards the end isn't as honest or effective as the practical makeup, making the climax feel a bit more like a theme park ride than a grounded haunting. THE VERDICT A 7/10. A stylish, gothic horror that’s a winner for fans of the wider universe who want more lore on its most iconic villain. It’s a sincere effort that looks gorgeous on screen, even if it doesn't quite hit the "epic status" of the 2013 original. While it’s more of a popcorn flick than a deep dive into terror, it’s a gripping watch that delivers exactly the kind of spooky church vibes you’d expect. A solid choice for a late-night session when you want a story that’s high on atmosphere and big on scares. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Bat Attack: During a scene in the catacombs, Demián Bichir was startled by a real fruit bat that flew into the set, which actually helped add a genuine sense of unease to his performance. • Sacred Ground: Since filming in real Romanian churches is forbidden, the production had to build a massive, detailed church set in a film studio in Bucharest, which took months to complete to ensure it looked historically honest. • Practical Horror: Director Corin Hardy wanted the "buried alive" sequence to feel as real as possible, so he actually had Taissa Farmiga placed in a real wooden coffin for the scene to capture her sincere claustrophobia. THE VIBE Like an old, cold crypt at midnight. It smells of damp earth, burnt candle wax, and the metallic tang of an ancient iron key.
