They name him Damien. As the boy grows, a series of grotesque, "accidental" deaths follow anyone who crosses him—or tries to warn Robert about the child’s true lineage. It turns out the toddler isn’t just a bit of a handful; he’s the Antichrist. This 1976 classic is a masterclass in religious dread, blending high-stakes political drama with some of the most creative and terrifying deaths in cinema history. THE PROS This is a total win for anyone who appreciates atmosphere; it carries an epic status because it treats the supernatural with a sincere, grounded gravity. Gregory Peck brings a level of prestige and genuine grit to the role, making his slow descent from skeptic to desperate father feel incredibly visceral. Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar-winning score—with those chilling "Ave Satani" chants—is a celebratory explosion of choral horror that still sets the gold standard for the genre. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cursed Production: The film is legendary for real-life "curses," including Gregory Peck’s plane being struck by lightning and the special effects consultant, John Richardson, being involved in a horrific car accident that mirrored the film's most famous death scene. • Dog Training: The Rottweilers used in the film were so well-trained and friendly that they had to be poked and prodded to act aggressively, and their tails often had to be taped to their legs to stop them from wagging happily during "attacks." • Casting Damien: Harvey Stephens was cast as Damien after he famously punched director Richard Donner in the groin during his audition—Donner decided then and there that the kid had the right "vicious" edge for the Antichrist.
