Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY In a gritty, polluted world, Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) is a downtrodden janitor at a shady health club. After falling into a vat of toxic waste while trying to save his son, he’s transformed into a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength. Armed with a glowing mop and a thirst for justice, he sets out to clean up the corrupt town of St. Blair and take down the greedy corporate villain, Bob Garbinger (Kevin Bacon). It’s a gory, satirical, and unapologetically weird reboot of the Troma cult classic that balances gross-out humor with a surprising amount of heart. THE PROS This is an absolute win for fans of "splatter-stick" comedy. It hits a 7 because it manages to keep the raw, DIY spirit of the original while having the budget to actually pull off some epic, stomach-turning practical effects. Peter Dinklage is an honest surprise here; he brings a sincere, pained depth to Winston that makes you actually care about the monster behind the mask. Kevin Bacon is clearly having a blast playing a cartoonishly evil corporate shill, and the costume design for "Toxie" is a masterclass in gritty, old-school prosthetic work. It’s a refreshing, honest middle finger to the polished, sanitized superhero movies we've seen for years. THE CONS The humor is incredibly "hit or miss"—if you aren't a fan of Troma’s signature brand of juvenile, over-the-top grossness, this will be a struggle. It stays at a 7 because the pacing can feel a bit frantic, jumping from one gory set piece to the next without giving the side characters much room to breathe. It misses a higher mark because the plot is a bit of a standard "origin story" checklist, and some of the satire regarding social media and corporate greed feels a little bit on the nose. It’s a fair shout for a late-night watch, but it’s definitely not for the squeamish or those looking for a "serious" action flick. THE VERDICT 7/10. A gritty, gory, and hilarious reboot that respects its cult roots. It’s an honest, messy, and fun ride that proves even a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength can be a hero.
