Overview

After his retirement is interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods, Thor Odinson enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who now wields Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor. Together they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Thor is on a quest for inner peace, having ditched the "superhero" life to wander the galaxy with the Guardians of the Galaxy. His retirement is cut short by Gorr the God Butcher, a man who has sworn to eliminate every deity in existence after his own god failed him. To stop Gorr, Thor teams up with King Valkyrie, Korg, and—to his absolute shock—his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who is now inexplicably wielding a reconstructed Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark on a cosmic journey to Omnipotence City to warn the gods and stop Gorr before he reaches Eternity to make a universe-altering wish. THE PROS Christian Bale is a winner as Gorr; he brings a sincere, terrifying gravitas to a film that desperately needs it. His performance is epic status, even if he feels like he’s in a completely different movie than everyone else. Natalie Portman’s return is quality, and seeing her as the Mighty Thor is a punchy highlight that gives the character a much-deserved arc. The "Shadow Realm" sequence—filmed entirely in black and white—is visually stunning and pure quality cinema, showing what director Taika Waititi can do when he leans into the more artistic side of the franchise. Russell Crowe also provides some quality laughs as a pompous, skirt-wearing Zeus, leaning hard into the absurdity of the "God of Gods." THE CONS It earns a 4/10 because it takes all the wrong lessons from 'Ragnarok' and cranks the humor up to a level that is frankly exhausting. The comedy is so relentless that it undercuts every sincere emotional beat, making Jane’s cancer diagnosis feel like an afterthought. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish despite being under two hours, and the screaming goats are a joke that becomes a damp squib within five minutes. It misses a higher mark because the CGI is shockingly quality-deficient for a $250 million movie—the "floating head" scene is particularly bad and looks like a rush job. It’s a bit of a mess that values quips over plot, leaving Gorr with far too little screen time and a finale that feels rushed and unearned. THE VERDICT A 4/10. Below average and highly recommended only for Marvel completionists or those who don't mind their cosmic epics being treated as a Saturday Night Live sketch. It’s a winner for Bale’s acting, but the rest is a bit of a damp squib.
