    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Thor’s world is literally falling apart. After the death of Odin, his long-lost, megalomaniac sister Hela—the Goddess of Death—returns to claim the throne of Asgard, effortlessly shattering Mjolnir in the process. Thrown across the galaxy to the neon-soaked junk planet of Sakaar, Thor is captured by a hard-drinking Valkyrie and forced into gladiatorial combat by the eccentric Grandmaster. To save his people from total annihilation (Ragnarok), he has to survive a "contest of champions" against his "friend from work," the Hulk, and convince a reluctant Loki to help him escape. It’s a race back to Asgard to stop Hela, even if it means destroying his home to save its soul. THE PROS Taika Waititi is an absolute winner for reinventing a franchise that was starting to feel a bit quality-deficient. He leans into Chris Hemsworth’s natural comedic timing, turning Thor into a punchy, self-deprecating hero rather than a stiff Shakespearean god. Cate Blanchett is epic status as Hela; she brings a sincere, menacing swagger to every scene, making her one of the MCU’s best villains. The visuals on Sakaar are pure quality—a Jack Kirby-inspired fever dream of primary colors and retro-future tech. It’s a 9/10 because it’s a genuine belter of a movie that balances its hilarious "Revengers" banter with a truly heavy stakes ending. Mark Ruffalo’s "toddler" version of Hulk is quality, and Tessa Thompson’s debut as Valkyrie is a standout that instantly feels like she’s always been part of the gang. THE CONS It misses a 10/10 mark because the transition between the high-stakes tragedy on Asgard and the zany comedy on Sakaar can feel slightly sluggish at times. While the humor is mostly quality, a few jokes are stretched a bit thin and can undercut some of the more sincere moments involving the Warriors Three. It earns a 9/10 because the death of Odin feels a bit rushed and is quickly overshadowed by the next action set-piece, which might feel like a damp squib for fans of the older, more dramatic Thor films. Jeff Goldblum is quality, but his Grandmaster can occasionally feel like he’s just playing Jeff Goldblum in space rather than a fully-realized character. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and highly recommended—this is the definitive Thor movie and one of the best entries in the entire MCU. He based the character’s voice on Polynesian bouncers he knew in New Zealand—men who were massive and intimidating but had incredibly soft, polite voices.
