Overview

God has abandoned Heaven. It's 1985: the Reagans are in the White House and Death swings the scythe of AIDS. In Manhattan, Prior Walter tells Louis, his lover of four years, he's ill; Louis leaves but asvdisease and loneliness ravage Prior, guilt invades Louis. Joe Pitt, a Mormon Republican attorney, is pushed by right-wing fixer Roy Cohn toward a job at the Justice Department. Pitt and Cohn are closeted: Pitt, out of shame and religious turmoil; Cohn, to preserve his power and access. Pitt's wife Harper is strung out on Valium, aching to escape a sexless marriage. An angel invites Prior to be a prophet in death.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The 2003 HBO adaptation of Tony Kushner’s landmark play that turned 1980s New York into a surreal, celestial battlefield. *Angels in America* follows the lives of several New Yorkers—including Prior Walter, who is battling AIDS, and the closeted Joe Pitt—as their stories intersect with ghosts, angels, and the infamous Roy Cohn. It is a sprawling, six-hour archive that attempts to reconcile the visceral terror of the AIDS epidemic with a sincere search for hope and "the Great Work" of progress. THE PROS The acting is a 100% authentic win; Al Pacino’s turn as the venomous Roy Cohn is a visceral masterpiece of ego and denial. Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson add a regal weight to the ensemble, playing multiple roles that keep the viewer on their toes.
