Overview

Superman, an incredibly powerful alien from the planet Krypton, defends Metropolis from supercriminals. Superman hides his identity behind the glasses of Clark Kent; a mild-mannered reporter for the newspaper the Daily Planet. At the Daily Planet Superman works with fellow reporter Lois Lane and photographer Jimmy Olsen.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY After the moody rain of Gotham, Bruce Timm and the crew decided to see if the sun actually shines in the DC Universe. Superman: The Animated Series (1996–2000) is the definitive take on the Big Blue Boy Scout, stripping away the cheesy silver-age fluff and giving us a Clark Kent who is as punchy as he is polite. It’s the origin story of the Man of Steel as he navigates Metropolis, battles a tech-obsessed Lex Luthor, and realizes that being the world's most powerful man is a bit of a nightmare when cosmic gods like Darkseid decide to show up and ruin your weekend. THE PROS Tim Daly as Clark/Superman is a total win; he brings a sincere, approachable warmth that makes you actually like the guy instead of just respecting his biceps. The show is the business for how it handled the villains—turning Brainiac into a cold, logical AI and making Lex Luthor a sleek corporate shark rather than a mad scientist was a genuine belter of a move. The action is high-octane and feels heavy; when Superman hits someone, you actually feel the shockwaves. It’s an authentic, bright, yet surprisingly mature look at what it means to be a hero without being a total bore. THE CONS It misses the 9/10 "Epic" mark because, compared to Batman, Metropolis can feel a bit wet and sterile. The "City of Tomorrow" is pretty, but it lacks the gritty, lived-in soul of Gotham, which can make some episodes feel a bit repetitive. Also, the show occasionally suffers from "Power Level Logic"—one week Superman is moving mountains, and the next he’s getting knocked flat by a stray electrical bolt, which is a total head-scratcher for anyone keeping track of the 900+ archive lore. It’s an 8/10 because it’s a vault essential, but it doesn't quite reach the moody perfection of its Bat-predecessor. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It is a sincere and witty-ly crafted series that proved Superman could be cool in the modern era. It isn’t a 9/10 because it takes a little while to find its edge, but once the New Gods and Darkseid enter the fray, it becomes the business. It is total garbage that we don't have a modern live-action version that captures this specific tone in 2026, but this animated classic remains a genuine masterpiece of superhero storytelling. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The "Z-Word" Secret: The producers actually wanted to avoid the "Z-word" (Zod) for as long as possible. Instead, they witty-ly created Jax-Ur and Mala as the Kryptonian criminals to keep the story fresh, only bringing in the vibe of the classic villains when the show had already established its own authentic identity.• Star-Studded Villains: Lex Luthor was voiced by Clancy Brown, who played the terrifying Kurgan in Highlander. Having a legendary movie villain voice a cartoon billionaire was a total win and gave Lex a sincere, menacing weight that no one has topped since.• Hidden Batman: If you look closely at the Metropolis skyline in various episodes, you can witty-ly spot posters and references to Gotham City. It was the creators' way of proving the world was connected long before the "World's Finest" crossover became a total fan-favorite event. THE VIBE Like a bright blue sky, the hum of a futuristic engine, and the feeling that everything is going to be okay as long as the cape is in the air. It’s hopeful, powerful, and surprisingly deep. It makes you want to stand up a bit straighter, look for a phone booth, and realize that sometimes the strongest thing you can be is kind.
