Ana de Armas
ActingBiography of
Ana de Armas
If Hollywood ever needed proof that charm can get you absolutely everywhere, they’d only have to point towards Ana de Armas. The Cuban actress has spent the last few years quietly pulling off one of the most impressive rises in modern cinema, going from Spanish-language television to sharing the screen with some of the biggest names in the business. And somehow, through all the glamour and worldwide fame, she still gives off the vibe of someone who’d happily sit down with you over a coffee and have a proper natter.
Long before she became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, Ana was already making a name for herself in Spain. But moving to America with limited English and attempting to crack Hollywood sounds less like a career plan and more like something your mates would politely tell you was completely bonkers. Thankfully, she ignored any sensible advice and went for it anyway.
For many film fans, the moment she truly announced herself came in Blade Runner 2049. In a film packed with giant stars and breathtaking visuals, Ana somehow managed to steal scenes while playing an artificial intelligence hologram, which is no small feat when you’re sharing the screen with Ryan Gosling looking permanently exhausted. From there, Hollywood quickly realised they had someone special on their hands.
Then came Knives Out, where she charmed audiences and somehow remained the only genuinely decent person in a family made up entirely of lunatics. It was the role that transformed her from rising talent into leading lady. Since then, she’s fought assassins, danced through Bond films and tackled the impossible task of portraying Marilyn Monroe, proving she’s more than happy to throw herself into difficult roles rather than simply playing it safe.
What makes Ana so likeable is that she seems completely untouched by the Hollywood machine. In an industry full of people desperately trying to convince everyone they’re fascinating, she comes across as refreshingly normal. Which is probably why audiences have taken to her so quickly.
Insomniacs Trivia
• When Ana first moved to Los Angeles, she could barely speak English. She learned the language in just a few months before landing major roles. Most of us struggle enough trying to remember our Duolingo streak.
• Her breakout role in Knives Out earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and director Rian Johnson later admitted he knew within seconds of her audition that she’d be perfect for the role.
• Despite becoming a global star, Ana still regularly returns to Cuba and has spoken about wanting to stay connected to her roots. Fame is all well and good, but home is home.
