You can easily mistake Jason Momoa for a bloke who was accidentally trapped in a time capsule from the Viking era and dropped straight onto a Hollywood red carpet. Towering over everyone at six-foot-four, covered in traditional tattoos, and rocking a mane of hair that looks like it hasn’t seen a pair of scissors since the turn of the century, he has completely torn up the rulebook on what a modern leading man is supposed to look like. Instead of playing the heavily polished, clean-shaven Hollywood standard, he has built a massive career out of pure, unbridled muscle and a brilliant, laid-back surfer energy.
He first properly grabbed everyone by the throat in Game of Thrones as the terrifyingly silent warlord Khal Drogo. Despite barely speaking a single word of English and bowing out after just one season, he made such a massive impact that he instantly became a household name. Hollywood suddenly realized they had a bloke who could look completely menacing while carrying an entire fantasy epic on his back. He parlayed that raw energy straight into the DC Extended Universe, completely reinventing Aquaman from a bit of a comic-book joke into a billion-dollar, trident-wielding powerhouse who could punch through tidal waves.
Truth be told, Jason is secretly just a massive, enthusiastic kid trapped inside the body of an absolute tank. He brings a chaotic, high-energy joy to every single project he touches, whether he’s playing the ultimate warrior Duncan Idaho in Dune, hamming it up as a flamboyant, bomb-detonating villain in Fast X, or bouncing through the digital block world of A Minecraft Movie. He’s also completely dominating the action-comedy scene with Dave Bautista in The Wrecking Crew, lending his booming voice to the animated comedy Animal Friends, and gearing up to go full comic-book accurate as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in James Gunn’s highly anticipated Supergirl movie.
Away from the blinding lights of movie sets, he’s a man who completely shuns the standard, heavily artificial celebrity lifestyle. He’s much happier living out of a camper van, scaling sheer cliff faces on a rock-climbing trip, or playing a bass guitar until his fingers bleed. He has spent his entire career proving that you can reach the absolute top of the global box office while remaining entirely authentic, keeping your feet firmly on the ground, and behaving like a bloke who just won a competition to be a movie star.
• The Marine Biology Pivot: Long before he ever thought about swinging swords or wearing superhero suits, Jason was actually preparing for a completely different life in the water. He was a proper academic who went to university to major in marine biology in Iowa, later transferring to wildlife biology in Colorado. He only abandoned the science labs when he moved back to Hawaii to reconnect with his family roots and got spotted by local designers.
• The Stolen Identity Audition: When he walked into the casting room for Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, the producers were completely stumped because the character had no actual dialogue written in the script. Knowing he had to do something completely unhinged to land the role, Jason didn't say a word—he instead launched into a terrifyingly intense, full-throttle performance of the Haka, a traditional Māori warrior dance. The casting directors were so genuinely intimidated they hired him on the spot.
• The 140-Stitch Face Smash: That iconic, rugged scar cutting right through his left eyebrow isn't a clever makeup trick or something he got from a stunt gone wrong. Back in 2008, long before he was famous, Jason was involved in a massive, random altercation at a Hollywood tavern where a bloke smashed a pint glass directly into his face. It required over 140 stitches and emergency reconstructive surgery to put his face back together, completely destroying his previous "pretty boy" modelling image and instantly landing him grittier action roles.
Jason Momoa is an absolute force of nature. In an industry full of people who are terrified of looking silly or stepping outside their comfort zone, he brings an infectious, larger-than-life joy to the screen that is impossible to fake. He can switch from a terrifying warrior to a hilarious, scenery-chewing villain in the blink of an eye, and his physical presence on screen is ridiculous. He treats the movie business like one massive playground, and honestly, modern cinema is a lot more fun with him around.
