Overview

Twenty-eight days after a killer virus was accidentally unleashed from a British research facility, a small group of London survivors are caught in a desperate struggle to protect themselves from the infected.     ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Jim wakes up from a coma in a deserted London hospital, only to find the city is a ghost town. A group of animal rights activists accidentally released a "Rage" virus that turns people into mindless, sprinting killers in seconds. After being rescued by a pair of survivors, Jim joins a small group—including the hardened Selena—as they trek across a desolate Britain toward a military broadcast promising salvation. They quickly learn that while the infected are terrifying, the surviving humans might be the real monsters. THE PROS This is a win because it completely reinvented the genre. Moving away from slow, shuffling ghouls to sprinting, screaming "infected" made the threat feel punchy and immediate. Cillian Murphy is epic in his breakout role, perfectly capturing the transition from a confused victim to a survivor. Danny Boyle’s use of digital cameras gives the film a gritty, documentary-style look that makes the empty London streets feel hauntingly real. It’s a 9/10 because it balances visceral horror with a deep, unsettling look at the collapse of society. THE CONS It misses the 10/10 mark because the final act at the military mansion shifts gears into a more traditional "slasher" movie, which feels a bit different from the atmospheric survival of the first half. The low-resolution digital look—while great for atmosphere—can feel a bit muddy on modern big screens. Some of the character decisions in the final showdown feel a bit forced to ensure a high-action climax. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and a vault essential for anyone who likes their horror with a bit of grit. It’s highly recommended and arguably the most influential horror film of the 2000s. Go and watch it for the "London Bridge" scene—it’s quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Ghost Town: To get the shots of a deserted London, the crew had to film at 4 AM on Sunday mornings. They could only shut down major roads like the M1 and Westminster Bridge for a few minutes at a time, often using attractive women in the crew to charm disgruntled drivers into waiting. • Blink and You’ll Miss It: Because the digital cameras were so small and portable, Danny Boyle was able to hide them in places traditional film cameras couldn't go, which is how he captured the frenetic, "shaky" energy of the infected attacks. • Alternate Endings: There are several filmed endings, including a much bleaker one where Jim dies in the hospital at the end. Test audiences found it too depressing, so the more hopeful "airplane" ending was used for the theatrical release. THE VIBE Like a lonely walk through a silent city. It smells like stagnant water, old newspapers, and adrenaline.
