⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Fede Álvarez delivers a high-quality, nerve-shredding masterclass in tension that reinvents the home invasion genre. Three small-time thieves in Detroit think they’ve found the ultimate easy target: a blind war veteran (Stephen Lang) sitting on a massive cash settlement in a derelict neighborhood. But the second they break in, the power dynamic flips. They realize too late that their target is a lethal predator who knows every inch of his darkened fortress. It’s a claustrophobic, silent battle for survival where the slightest sound is a death sentence. THE PROS This earns its 9/10 and "Epic Status" because it is a relentless, high-quality exercise in suspense. Stephen Lang is a total winner; without saying more than a few words, he creates a legendary and terrifying antagonist who feels like a force of nature. The cinematography is absolute quality, using long, sweeping takes to map out the house so the audience knows exactly how trapped the characters are. It hits the 9/10 mark because of the "blackout" basement sequence—a legendary, high-quality bit of filmmaking that levels the playing field in a terrifying way. The script is a total banger, throwing in a sincere and disturbing mid-movie twist that shifts the film from a simple heist gone wrong into something much darker and more honest.
