⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Kevin Costner returns to his cinematic home—the American West—for the first chapter of a pained, massive four-part odyssey. Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, the story follows a sprawling ensemble of characters as they converge on the promised settlement of Horizon. From a mother and daughter (Sienna Miller) surviving a visceral Apache raid to a wagon train led by a weary Luke Wilson, and Costner’s own understated horse trader, Hayes Ellison, everyone is chasing a pained version of the American Dream. It’s an honest, slow-moving tapestry that looks at the gritty collision of cultures and the brutal cost of westward expansion. THE PROS The film is an absolute visual belter. It hits a 7 because the cinematography is epic, capturing sweeping, pained vistas that demand to be seen on a massive screen.
