⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Set nine years after their first brush with the dark realm, Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) and a now college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) find their suppressed memories are starting to leak. The mental fog they’ve lived in is lifting, and the demons they thought were locked away are scratching at the door. To finally put the ghosts to rest, father and son have to go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing the original red-faced demon and the generational trauma that’s been stalking their family since the beginning. THE PROS Patrick Wilson steps behind the camera for his directorial debut, and he clearly has a gritty, honest handle on the characters he's played for over a decade. It hits a 6 because it focuses heavily on the fractured relationship between Josh and Dalton, turning the horror into a metaphor for men struggling to talk about their past. Ty Simpkins gives a solid performance as a moody art student, and the scenes where his paintings begin to manifest the horrors of his subconscious are visually smart. There are a few classic, high-tension jump scares—including a particularly nasty bit in an MRI machine—that prove the franchise still knows how to make you jump out of your skin. THE CONS It stays at a 6 because it feels a bit "safe" for a final chapter. It misses a higher mark because the plot takes a long time to get moving, with the first hour feeling more like a slow-burn indie drama than a terrifying supernatural thriller. The supporting cast at the college feels a bit like background noise, and the humor doesn't always land as smoothly as it did in previous installments. While it’s nice to see the original family back together, the actual exploration of The Further doesn't offer much that we haven't seen in the earlier films, making the big finale feel a touch familiar. It’s a fair shout for fans who want closure for the Lamberts, but if you’re looking for the raw dread of the first two movies, this one is a bit more of a quiet walk down memory lane.
