⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY If you like your period dramas with a side of "what on earth was that noise in the attic," Marrowbone is for you. Set in 1969, four siblings hide out in a decaying manor to stay together after their mother passes away. They’ve got a strict set of rules to keep the local authorities away, but there’s something else in the house that doesn't care much for their privacy. It is a haunting, atmospheric slow-burn that blurs the lines between a psychological thriller and a straight-up ghost story. THE PROS The cast is a absolute powerhouse of "before they were mega-famous" stars. You’ve got George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Heaton all putting in serious shifts to make the family bond feel sincere and desperate. The house itself is a character, dripping with dread and beautiful, dusty cinematography that makes every shadow look suspicious. It’s one of those films that relies on tension and genuine chills rather than just throwing loud noises at your face every five minutes. THE CONS It settles at a 7/10 because the middle section hits a bit of a "Languid Burn" that might test your patience if you’re looking for fast-paced horror. While the atmosphere is spot on, some of the plot twists feel a little heavy-handed, and if you’ve seen enough Gothic thrillers, you might smell the ending coming from a mile off. It isn't bad, but it isn't quite the genre-defining epic it wants to be. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It is a solid, well-acted thriller that is perfect for a rainy night in. It isn't going to redefine the genre, but the performances alone make it worth a watch. Not quite "epic" status, but definitely not a stay-clear signal either.
