    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA moving National Geographic documentary that blends personal family history with a deep look at a changing planet. Directed by Oscar nominee Sara Dosa, the film follows renowned Icelandic author and poet Andri Snær Magnason as he tries to build a cinematic time capsule. Using old family home films, photographs, and traditional folktales, he ties his own family's deep connection to Iceland's wilderness to the tragic, modern-day disappearing of the country's massive glaciers. THE PROSThe film is visually breathtaking, featuring stunning big-screen shots of deep blue ice caverns, rolling fog, and the rugged, massive scale of the Icelandic landscape. The soundtrack by electronic musician Dan Deacon is brilliant, matching the haunting and beautiful tone of the visuals perfectly. What makes it work so well is how personal it feels; instead of dumping dry science facts on you, it frames the environment through the lovely, real-life love story of Andri's grandparents, who spent their 1950s honeymoon exploring the ice. THE CONSThe film moves at a very slow, poetic pace that will definitely test your patience if you prefer fast, snappy documentaries. Towards the final third, the editing gets a bit repetitive, as the narrative circles back to the same ideas and lingers on long shots of cracking ice without any narration. The sudden cuts between grand geological discussions and random, old clips of kids playing in backyards can feel a bit jarring and break up the flow of the main message. THE VERDICTAn 8/10. It is a powerful, gorgeous, and deeply emotional documentary that avoids the usual doom-and-gloom style to deliver something genuinely full of hope. It comfortably earns an 8 because it manages to take a massive global issue and make it feel incredibly personal and human. It just misses a higher mark because the pacing drags quite a bit in the second half, but the spectacular imagery and moving family stories make it a must-watch piece of filmmaking.
