⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is seven days away from retirement and already has his mental bags packed. Then he gets paired with the hot-headed Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) in a city where it never stops raining and the local hobby is apparently "creative homicide." They’re hunting "John Doe," a serial killer who turns the Seven Deadly Sins into a high-concept art gallery of corpses. It’s a bleak, oppressive descent into a city that feels like it’s being flushed down the drain, leading to a desert standoff and a cardboard box that ruined everyone’s 1995. THE PROS David Fincher’s direction is surgically cold. The atmosphere is so thick with grime you’ll want to take a shower as soon as the credits roll. Morgan Freeman is the perfect weary anchor to Brad Pitt’s "act first, think later" energy. The real genius, though, is that you barely see any of the actual violence—it’s the aftermath and the sheer imagination of the crimes that get under your skin. Kevin Spacey’s late-game entry as John Doe is a "Guaranteed Banger" of a performance; he’s calm, rational, and completely terrifying because he truly believes he’s the hero of the story. THE CONS It is aggressively depressing. If you’re looking for a "the good guys win and go for pizza" ending, you’ve made a terrible mistake. It’s a 9/10 because it’s a masterpiece of the genre, but it’s so heavy and nihilistic that it can feel like a bit of a slog through the mud during the middle act. Also, the city is never named, which adds to the "purgatory" vibe but can make the world feel a bit abstract and disconnected from reality. THE VERDICT The definitive 90s thriller. It’s smart, cruel, and visually iconic. It’s the movie that proved Fincher was a force to be reckoned with and gave us the most-quoted question in cinema history. It’s a 9/10 because it’s perfect at what it tries to be: a punch to the gut that leaves you gasping for air in the dark. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA During the rain-slicked chase scene, Brad Pitt actually fell and slammed his arm through a car windshield, severing tendons so deeply his bone was visible. Instead of pausing production, they just wrote the injury into the script—so Mills’ cast in the second half of the movie is 100% real. Also, the "Sloth" victim wasn't a prop; it was a very thin actor (98 lbs) who spent 14 hours in the makeup chair to look that malnourished. When he "woke up" during the scene, his cough was so realistic it actually scared the life out of the actors on set. THE VIBE Like a wet, heavy wool coat that you can't take off. It’s cold, smells like damp concrete, and makes you want to double-lock your doors and turn on every light in the house.
