⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The latest installment in Netflix’s Untold series (released April 14, 2026) dives into the early 2000s Portland Trail Blazers—a team that had enough talent to win three championships and enough legal fees to fund a small country. Nicknamed the "Jail Blazers," this squad was a powder keg of personality featuring Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, and Damon Stoudamire. The doc explores how they went from being the darlings of the NBA to the most hated men in Oregon, blending high-level basketball with a "sociology experiment" involving weed, dogfighting, and locker room brawls. THE PROS The access is a "Guaranteed Banger." Getting Rasheed Wallace to sit down and actually talk—rather than just yelling "Both teams played hard"—is a miracle in itself. The Way Brothers (directors) do a great job of peeling back the "villain" label to show the humanity and the racial tension of a black team playing in a very white city. It’s nostalgic, gritty, and the archival footage of those legendary practices makes you realize just how good they actually were. It’s not just a sports doc; it’s a story about a city’s relationship with its stars. THE CONS It leans a little heavy on the "we were misunderstood" narrative. While it provides context for their actions, it occasionally glosses over some of the more serious off-court incidents to keep the players likable. At 85 minutes, it also feels a bit rushed; you could easily spend three hours on this era and still not cover every arrest or technical foul. If you aren't an NBA fan, some of the tactical basketball talk might feel like "insider baseball" (or insider basketball, I guess). THE VERDICT An 8/10. It’s "The Business" for anyone who misses the era of baggy jerseys and authentic basketball personalities. It doesn't quite hit the 9/10 heights of The Last Dance, but it’s a top-tier sports documentary that proves the most interesting stories happen when the whistle blows. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA The moniker "Jail Blazers" actually started as a cover story for Willamette Week in 1996, long before the team’s peak notoriety. Also, the documentary reveals that Rasheed Wallace once allegedly threatened referee Tim Donaghy on a loading dock after a game—an incident that led to the longest non-violence-related suspension in NBA history (seven games). Fun fact: Bonzi Wells admits in the film that he "blacked out" from anger before flipping off a fan in 2002, a moment that became the turning point for the city's hatred of the team. THE VIBE Like a headband and a technical foul. It’s loud, rebellious, and makes you miss the days when the NBA felt a little more "wild west" and a little less corporate.
