⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Told through flashbacks, Rafiki recounts the origin of the greatest king of the Pride Lands. Long before he was a legend, Mufasa was an orphaned cub, lost and alone, until he met a sympathetic prince named Taka—the lion who would eventually become Scar. The story follows their journey as they search for a place to belong, showing how a stray with no royal blood rose to power while his brotherly bond with Taka slowly began to rot. It’s a gritty, photorealistic look at the brotherhood that shaped the fate of the savanna. THE PROS The visual effects are a massive step up even from the previous film, with the environments and lighting looking almost indistinguishable from a real nature documentary. It hits a 7 because the voice acting from Aaron Pierre (Mufasa) and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Taka) brings a sincere, tragic weight to the relationship that was missing from the 2019 remake. The action sequences feel more visceral and less "stiff," with the animals moving with a genuine predatory speed. It’s an honest attempt to add depth to a backstory we only knew in fragments, making the eventual rivalry feel much more painful. THE CONS It still struggles with the "uncanny valley" problem where the photorealistic faces can’t quite express the high-stakes emotion the script demands. It stays at a 7 because the musical numbers, while decent, don't have that iconic, timeless punch of the original 1994 tracks. It misses a higher mark because the framing device—Timon and Pumbaa listening to the story—can feel a bit forced and occasionally kills the tension of the more serious prequel scenes. At times, it feels like it’s checking boxes to link up with the original movie rather than letting the new story breathe. THE VERDICT 7/10. A visually stunning and surprisingly emotional prequel. It’s an honest, well-crafted expansion of the lore that gives Mufasa and Scar a much needed layer of complexity. If you can get past the "talking taxidermy" look of the animals, there’s a solid story here.
