⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY The drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as cartels begin human trafficking, including suspected terrorists. To stir up a war between the rival factions, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) re-enlists the mysterious "operative" Alejandro (Benicio del Toro). Their plan involves kidnapping the daughter of a kingpin, but when the mission goes sideways and the US government pulls the plug, Alejandro finds himself on a rogue path to protect the girl he was meant to use as bait. It’s a bleak, dusty, and uncompromising look at a conflict where the "good guys" are just as cold as the villains. THE PROS Benicio del Toro is an absolute win; he remains a total belter as Alejandro, bringing a silent, predatory intensity that carries the film's second half. The tension is a celebratory explosion of dread, particularly during the desert convoy sequences which are filmed with a sincere, heart-pounding realism. Josh Brolin provides a great foil, showing the bureaucratic coldness of modern warfare. It’s a good movie because it maintains the grim, "no-win" atmosphere of the original, proving that this world is just as dangerous and morally grey as ever. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it is a bit of a head-scratcher compared to the first film’s tight narrative; without Emily Blunt’s "moral compass" character, the story feels a bit like it’s drifting in the sand.
