⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 3/10 THE SUMMARY Rupert Sanders takes a stab at reimagining the gothic cult classic, but instead of a flight to remember, this reboot feels like it’s grounded in the mud. Bill Skarsgård stars as Eric Draven, a "broken" soul who meets Shelly (FKA twigs) in a rehab facility. They escape and fall into a whirlwind romance, only for Shelly’s dark past with a demonic crime lord named Roeg (Danny Huston) to catch up with them. After they are both brutally murdered, Eric is sent back from a purgatory-like "limbo" to seek bloody revenge. It tries to modernize the lore by making the Crow's powers dependent on the purity of his love, but it ends up losing the soul of the source material in the process. THE PROS Bill Skarsgård is clearly trying his best with what he’s been given, bringing a raw, physical intensity to the role that feels sincere even when the script fails him. It earns a 3/10 because the "Opera House" sequence is a genuine highlight—it’s a brutal, gore-soaked action piece that finally shows what a modern R-rated Crow could have been. The cinematography in certain scenes captures a grimy, rain-slicked aesthetic that feels honest to the graphic novel's roots. Danny Huston is a reliable "bad guy" who does his best to make a fairly thin villain feel threatening, and the practical gore effects in the final part of the movie are impressively wince-inducing for those with a stomach for it. THE CONS It lands a 3/10 because the first half is incredibly sluggish, spending nearly an hour on a romance that feels more like a perfume advert than a "love that transcends death." The dialogue is often a total clanger, filled with "emo" platitudes that feel dated and forced rather than poetic. It misses a higher mark because the unique, dark "swagger" of the 1994 original is completely absent, replaced by a generic action-thriller vibe that lacks any real magic. The logic of the supernatural elements is a bit of a "head-scratcher," and FKA twigs is given so little to do that her character feels more like a plot device than a person. It’s a dull, joyless experience that feels like it’s trying too hard to be "edgy" without actually having anything to say. THE VERDICT A 3/10. A quality-deficient reboot that proves some classics are better left in the grave.
