⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY In a remote, grit-flecked mountain village, a young girl named Kyra (Helena Zengel) is raised to fear the forest and the "Ochi"—mysterious, tiny creatures rumored to be man-eaters. After discovering a stray baby Ochi, Kyra realizes the stories are a lie and sets off on an epic journey to return the creature to its family. Chased by a group of villagers led by a determined leader (Willem Dafoe) and a bumbling band of Ochi-hunters (including Finn Wolfhard), Kyra has to navigate a world that would rather destroy what it doesn't understand. THE PROS This is a win for anyone who misses the honest, tactile feel of 80s creature features like 'The Dark Crystal' or 'E.T.' It hits a 7 because the film uses incredible practical puppetry for the Ochi, giving them a pained, expressive reality that CGI just can't touch. Helena Zengel is a sincere standout, carrying the emotional weight of the film with a raw, gritty performance that makes her bond with the creature feel visceral. Willem Dafoe brings his signature intense energy to the role, and the world-building is an absolute banger—the village and the deep forest feel lived-in, old, and dangerous. THE CONS It stays at a 7 because the tone can be a bit of a "head scratcher" for some; it wavers between a whimsical fairy tale and a much darker, pained survival story that might be a bit intense for younger kids. It misses a higher mark because the pacing in the middle act slows down significantly as Kyra wanders the wilderness, and some of the side characters feel a bit thin compared to the central duo. While the practical effects are epic, a few of the wider shots involving larger groups of creatures rely on digital work that doesn't quite have the same grit as the puppets. THE VERDICT 7/10. An honest, beautiful, and slightly weird adventure that prioritizes heart and hand-crafted magic over digital polish. It’s a fair shout for fans of old-school fantasy who want a story with real teeth and a lot of soul. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Director Isaiah Saxon, known for his high-concept music videos for artists like Björk, insisted on using practical animatronics and puppets for the Ochi to ensure they felt like real, breathing animals on set.• Willem Dafoe and the cast spent weeks filming in the rugged landscapes of Romania, dealing with actual mud and freezing temperatures to keep the "survival" aspect of the film feeling honest.• The unique language spoken by the Ochi was developed specifically for the film, using a mix of animal sounds and phonetic patterns to create a "speech" that feels both alien and emotional. THE VIBE Like moss growing over an old stone wall. It smells of damp pine, woodsmoke, and the metallic tang of a cold mountain stream.
