If you were to compile a list of the absolute heavyweights of modern cinema, Scarlett Johansson would be sitting comfortably near the very top of the pile. She is a proper, old-school movie star in every sense of the word. With more than $15 billion at the global box office, she's one of the highest-grossing actors in history, which is rather impressive considering she achieved most of it while making wisecracks, fighting aliens and somehow looking completely unfazed by the end of the world.
What makes Scarlett so fascinating, though, isn't the staggering numbers. It's the fact she's managed to move effortlessly between billion-dollar blockbusters and intimate dramas without ever looking out of place. One minute she's saving humanity, the next she's delivering performances so emotionally devastating that you feel like ringing your mum afterwards.
She first made the industry sit up and pay attention with Lost in Translation. Sharing the screen with Bill Murray could have swallowed up a lesser actor, but Scarlett's performance announced that she was something special. While many young stars spend years trying to escape the label of "promising newcomer", Johansson seemed to skip that stage entirely and go straight to becoming one of the most respected actresses around.
Of course, for a huge chunk of the planet, she will always be Natasha Romanoff. For over a decade, Scarlett brought Black Widow to life and somehow managed to hold her own alongside gods, super soldiers, billionaire geniuses and a giant green bloke with anger issues. She gave the Marvel universe a grounded humanity, proving that you don't necessarily need magic hammers or laser eyes to steal scenes.
And unlike some stars who settle into one thing and never leave their comfort zone, Scarlett keeps reinventing herself. Whether it's heartbreak in Marriage Story, dark satire in Jojo Rabbit, quirky Wes Anderson films or stepping behind the camera to direct, she has spent her entire career refusing to be boxed in. Which is probably why she's remained one of Hollywood's most enduring stars.
• Long before fame arrived, a young Scarlett would stand in front of the mirror and practice crying on command while trying to channel Judy Garland. Most kids were pretending to be Batman. Scarlett was preparing for Oscar season.
• Believe it or not, she wasn't Marvel's first choice for Black Widow. Emily Blunt originally landed the role before scheduling conflicts forced her to step aside. Somewhere in the multiverse, another actress is wondering what might have been.
• To escape the madness of fame, Scarlett has occasionally disguised herself with a fake moustache and dressed as a bloke so she could sneak into cinemas unnoticed. Which sounds less like a Hollywood A-lister and more like something out of a Carry On film.
Scarlett Johansson is the definition of elite screen presence. In an industry that loves putting actors into neat little boxes, she's spent decades kicking the lid off and wandering somewhere far more interesting. Whether she's battling alien armies, breaking your heart in a drama or quietly reinventing herself behind the camera, she brings intelligence, wit and an effortless cool that very few actors possess. Quite simply, she's one of the defining stars of her generation, and she doesn't look remotely interested in slowing down.
