7 Reasons Why This Project Hail Mary Review Proves It’s a 10/10 Masterpiece

Right, let’s stop the search. We can all go home. I’ve spent years picking apart films like a bored toddler with a Lego set, finding flaws in everything from dodgy lighting to “science” that makes about as much sense as a chocolate teapot. But Project Hail Mary has done the impossible. It’s broken my streak of being a cynical critic. I’m officially upgrading this Movie from a 9 to a perfect 10/10 on Insomniacs. (Which falls into the ‘epic’ category)

It isn’t just a good watch; it’s the best sci-fi movie I’ve seen in years, and I don’t say that lightly. This Project Hail Mary review is basically my public confession that I’ve finally found a film I can’t moan about.

Ryland Grace confused in the lab
Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace in PROJECT HAIL MARY, from Amazon MGM Studios.

When we first meet Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, he’s waking up in a coma on a spaceship with a severe case of “who am I and why are there dead people here?” The original Project Hail Mary review on our site sat at a 9, but the more I think about the execution, the more it feels like a disservice.

The CGI is absolutely top-tier—the Tau Ceti system looks breathtaking—but it’s the story that really grips you. The way the narrative flickers between the “now” in deep space and the chaotic flashbacks of how a school teacher ended up being the last hope for humanity is masterfully done. It doesn’t feel like clunky exposition; it feels like a puzzle you’re desperate to solve.

The pacing is relentless. One minute he’s a middle-school science teacher being forced into the most important job in human history by the formidable Eva Stratt, and the next, he’s light-years away trying to figure out why the sun is being eaten by space-algae known as Astrophage. It’s high-stakes, stressful, and yet filled with that dry, optimistic banter that makes the best sci-fi movies actually watchable. This Project Hail Mary review has to mention the structure; the “memory-gain” mechanic works perfectly to keep the audience as confused and curious as the protagonist. You feel his panic, his confusion, and ultimately, his genius.

Then, there’s Rocky. If you told me I’d genuinely fall in love with a five-legged, eyeless alien that looks like a sentient rock and communicates through musical notes, I’d have called you mad. But Rocky is the heart of this film. Their interactions are witty, hilarious, and surprisingly moving. The friendship that develops between this amnesiac human and a mechanical genius from the Eridani system is pure cinema.

It’s rare to find an alien-human dynamic that feels this authentic and funny without being cheesy. Watching them figure out how to talk to each other using clocks and spreadsheets is genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a cinema in a long time. “Fist my bump!” is going to be a catchphrase for years, mark my words. Any honest Project Hail Mary review needs to highlight that Rocky is a scene-stealer.

Most sci-fi buffs are used to being let down by third acts that fall apart or dive into “power of love” nonsense, but the film stays tight until the final frame. It offers that specific brand of sci-fi bliss where the science actually feels grounded—you can tell Andy Weir’s source material was treated with respect—yet the scale is massive.

It’s a film about problem-solving, survival, and the kind of international (and interstellar) cooperation we rarely see anymore. It’s bold, it’s beautiful, and quite frankly, it’s going to absolutely smash the next awards season. It’s a rare occurrence when a film is this smart, this funny, and this visually stunning all at once.

We don’t hand out 10s like candy at Insomniacs. A 10 is “epic status” only, and this earns every single point. It’s the kind of movie that reminds you why you fell in love with the big screen in the first place. Whether you’re here for the physics, the banter, or just to see Rocky being a legend, this is essential viewing. To wrap up this Project Hail Mary review, if you haven’t seen it yet, drop everything and fix that immediately. It’s a genuine masterpiece that proves sci-fi still has the power to surprise u
